Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, August 4, 2014 - 15:11.  Updated on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 - 17:03.

Two men in their 20’s have died after crashing their vehicles in separate road accidents in Ma'ufanga and Vaini last week.

The Police Commissioner Grant O’Fee said a 22-year-old from Pili died early Saturday morning 2 August in a car crash on Salote Road in Ma'ufanga.

He was heading east when he crashed into an electricity pole at around 12:20am. He died on the scene while his five passengers sustained minor injuries.

Investigators from the Police Criminal Investigation Unit believed alcohol and speed were factors in the accident.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man from Lapaha died last night Sunday 3 August, at Vaiola Hospital from severe injuries in a road accident on Thursday night 31 July.

Commissoner O'Fee said he was driving a rental car with four passengers heading east on Taufa’ahau Road when he swerved and crashed into a tree on the side of the road between Nualei and Vaini.

Four of his passengers sustained minor injuries.

Police investigators believed alcohol and speed also contributed to this death.

Five road deaths have been recorded in Tonga so far this year.
