King to open final Parliamentary session before election [1]

HM King Tupou VI will open the last session of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga for the 2010-14 term on Thursday, June 5.

The Supervisor of Elections Pita Vuki has confirmed November 27 as the tentative date for the 2014 General Election.

The House will sit on Monday, June 9 to deliberate on the National Budget 2014/15 before parliamentarians go on their annual constituency visit from July 7-18.

The House reconvenes on July 21 until September 4 when it closes for the year to allow enough time for candidates to campaign before the election. Normally, the House sits until October or November, stated the Parliament office today.

The state opening ceremony will start on June 5 at 10:30am at Parliament House.
