A 26-year-old man who was a suspect in a stabbing investigation in Nuku'alofa, has committed suicide, Tonga Police reported today.

The deceased  from Mataika, Vava'u, was living at Ma'ufanga. He was under investigation after being accused of stabbing his girlfriend at Fasi on Monday, May 5.

A 26-year-old woman is recovering at Vaiola Hospital after being stabbed on the right side of her neck and upper shoulder.

The incident was reported to the Police at 8:30am on Monday. The boyfriend who was working as a security guard in Nuku'alofa called his girlfriend on her cellphone and another man answered it. He allegedly went to her house and stabbed her on the right side of her neck and upper shoulder before disappearing.

On Tuesday morning, May 6 the police received a report of a suicide at a home in Ma'ufanga. Investigators confirmed the deceased was the suspect in the stabbing inquiry.

An inquest carried out yesterday had concluded the death was a suicide.The deceased is from Mataika, Vava'u, but was living at Ma'ufanga.
