Convicted Wife Killer appeals prison sentence [1]

Tonga’s Court of Appeal 2014 Session will start next Monday, 31 March. The Appeal judges will preside over 15 appeal cases, nine criminal appeals, four civil and two land cases.

Among the criminal cases is an appeal by Sione Vaomotou against a 14-year sentence for killing his wife after stabbing her more then 20 times at Ma’ufanga in 2009. He was acquitted of murder by a jury who found him guilty on a lesser charge of manslaughter in September 2010.

Another appellant is convicted rapist, Selino Latu who is appealing a 14-years sentence for raping a woman in Fungamisi, Vava’u in May 2009. A jury had found him guilty on five charges that included three of rape and two of indecent assault.

The judges for this year's Court of Appeal are Mr Justice Sir Gordon Ward, Mr Justice Peter Salmon and Mr Justice Sir Peter Blanchard.

Judgments would be delivered on Friday, April 11.
