Nuku'alofa CBD road works to be completed in March [1]

A multi million pa'anga project to improve public roads and civil works in the Nuku'alofa Central Business District is on track to be completed by March 31, despite setbacks of the cyclones and flooding this month.
There are only five weeks left before the final draw-down of a total TOP$118 million pa'anga loan from China and when all construction works under the Nuku'alofa Reconstruction Project, including the CBD roads and civil works should be completed. Around TOP$20 million of the total China loan was allocated for the civil work that includes the CBD road works.
Charles Nepia, the Project Engineer for the Nuku'alofa Reconstruction Project, told Matangi Tonga on February 21, the project was on track, on time and on budget, despite the recent weather setbacks.
The CBD road reinstatement project work completed included rehabilitation and improvements to the existing storm water drainage system network by removing blockages, debris and repair of the system that was already in place. They have installed additional storm water drainage including cesspits, manholes and provision of waste water system within the CBD, along with construction of new kerbs, channels and footpath, except for the section in front of Tungi Arcade, now underway.
Charles said thta other work that was still being carried included new road signage, repair of existing road surface and alignment of in ground service covers, and the road work connection to Vuna Wharf that would be completed by the end of February.
In the central CBD, the former TCF site is being developed into a paved car park with 40 spaces, and landscaping work would be completed by the end of February, he said.
The final work on the asphalt pavement surfacing to CBD road areas and new road markings is expected to be done by the end of March.
CBD Roads being completed under this project include Taufa'ahau Road from Vuna to Laifone, Railway Road from Vuna to Laifone, 'Unga Road from Salote Road to Wellington Road, Fatafehi Road from Vuna to Wellington Road, Tu'i Road from Pangai Lahi to Laifone, Laifone Road from Taufa'ahau to Railway, Wellington Road from Vaha'akolo to Fatafehi, Salote Road from Vaha'akolo to Fatafehi Road and Sateki Avenue.
