Tonga holds national church service for Christchurch quake victims [1]

THE Government of Tonga, along with church leaders of the nation, will hold a special church service tomorrow evening, Sunday 27th February, to pray for the community of Christchurch as well as the New Zealand government, following the devastating earthquake on Tuesday 22nd February.
At the same time, the Prime Minister of Tonga Lord Tu'ivakano has reemphasized the country's shared shock and grief at the disaster, pledging any assistance needed by the New Zealand Government.
"I, the Government and the people of Tonga were shocked and extremely saddened to hear the news of the earthquake which devastated Christchurch on Tuesday 22nd February, and coming so soon after the devastating effects of the earthquake last September," said a letter from Lord Tuivakano addressed to New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.
"It is difficult through during these tragic times to find words of comfort which truly reflect our mutual sorrow . . . "
"The Tongan government stands ready to provide whatever assistance you feel would be helpful in this situation."
Tonga and New Zealand have enjoyed a long-standing relationship of mutual support and friendship, spanning economic, social and political ties.
Tomorrow's service will be held at the Free Wesleyan Church Centenary Church in Nuku'alofa at 7.30pm. The service will involve all major religions in Tonga and all are invited to attend. Prime Minister's Office, 26/02/11.
