Tonga assists victims of Japan's earthquakes [1]

THE Government of Tonga and the Tonga Red Cross Society made cash donations totalling $247,020 last week to assist the victims of Japan's earthquakes and devastating tsunami on March 11, 2011.
Tonga's Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano on March 24 handed over Government's donation of $200,000 pa'anga taken from its National Emergency Funds, to the Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Yasuo Takase.
Lord Tu'ivakano expressed his deepest condolences to the victims in Japan. "Our contribution is not much due to the economic status of our country. But it may at least help one or two families," he said.
He also acknowledged the significant aid contributions from Japan to Tonga over the past years.
The Ambassador replied that Tonga's gift showed how deep and close the relations are between Tonga and Japan and he expressed their appreciation to the people and Government of Tonga for their best effort.
"We are encouraged by every heartfelt word, the actions and condolences that have been conveyed to us."
Red Cross
Meanwhile, the Tonga Red Cross Society, raised $47,020 pa'anga during a four hour fundraising radiothon held on March 19 and sent their cash donation to Japan's Red Cross on March 25.
The Secretary General of the Tonga Red Cross, Sione Taumoefolau, said JICA volunteers and about 50 staff of the Tonga Red Cross Society volunteers came together and collected donations.
"This is not about reciprocating the assistance Japan has given us over the past 41 years. We give because we care and it is our duty to our fellow human beings," he said.
Hon Alaileula Tuku'aho the Chairperson of the Tonga Red Cross Society was also not surprised by the donations and the spirit of sharing in Tonga.
"I know our people feel greatly for our friends in Japan and we commiserate with their loss especially knowing the close relationship that Tonga and Japan have."
