A 39-year-old woman in the US, Zoranna Mapapalangi (reportedly of Tongan ethnicity), has been sentenced to 6 years imprisonment by a Californian court for the robbery and elder abuse of a 75-year-old woman. Zoranna was sentenced last Tuesday, March 28.
Zoranna pleaded no contest to the charges laid against her. According to local reports, Zoranna was the caretaker of the elderly victim who lived in El Granada, San Mateo County. Prosecutors said that she was one of two suspects who entered the victim's home after midnight on August 14 last year. The suspects allegedly bounded the victim to her bed and covered her face with a pillowcase before demanding money and later ransacking her home.
The elderly victim told investigators that she recognised Zoranna's voice during the robbery. Zoranna's husband was initially arrested and charged as the second suspect in the robbery. He was later released from custody as prosecutors could not prove his involvement. The identity of the second suspect remains unknown.
