Australia as a development partner, would continue to support the directions Tonga sets to achieve sustainable inclusive growth, said HE Mr Brett Aldam during Australia Day celebrations marked on 26 January, in Nuku'alofa.
Aldam, who will completing his three-year term as Australia's High Commissioner to Tonga on 2 February, said as an Australian in Tonga, Australia Day is an opportunity to celebrate the bonds of friendship between our two countries.
“We appreciate Tonga’s clear and consistent voice on issues that truly matter to the Pacific and your willingness as we have seen in Bougainville, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Cyclone Pam - to come to the aid of our Pacific friends and neighbours in their hour of need."
He said Australia was proud to be a partner to Tonga. "Our true measure as a friend and partner will always be how effective we are in the support we provide and we expect to be judged accordingly. ...As we start 2016, I must reiterate that Australia will always strive to be the best possible friend and partner of the Kingdom of Tonga and its people."
The High Commissioner noted that HRH Crown Prince Tupouto'a Ulukalala during a recent visit to northern and central Australia had been able to spend time with Indigenous communities and learn more about their cultures and experiences.
Crown Prince Tupouto'a Ulukalala and Crown Princess Sinaitakala were the guests of honour at the Australia Day reception held at the Australian residence on Vuna Road.
Aldam became the Australian High Commissioner to Tonga in February 2013.
