We are seeking the next wave of values-driven, strengths-based stories for upcoming Pacific digital storytelling projects.

Pacific Kids’ Learning is a Pacific- led social enterprise from New Zealand that specialises in creating digital learning resources for Pacific children. We have collaborated with Pacific communities to create 300 animated stories, dances and songs in ten Pacific languages (and English). These animations are available on our Pacific Digital Library platform - the world’s first repository for Pacific language children’s content.

We are now seeking new stories for upcoming digital storytelling projects. There are two theme streams we are focusing on for this round. Authors of the selected stories will be paid an upfront selection fee - full terms and conditions can be found on our website, alongside the submission portal.

We are looking for:

  • Stories aimed at Pacific youth 4-14 years old
  • 400-800 words
  • Can be written in English and / or a Pacific / Melanesian language
  • We are looking for a variety of stories from a variety of cultures and authors
  • No age limits for authors -any age is accepted.
  • We encourage intergenerational storytelling - family teams of grandparents/parents/aunts/uncles/children are welcome
  • Selected stories will be animated and available worldwide on the Pacific Digital Library
  • Submit a completed story or a writing sample for consideration for future projects

Theme Stream 1 - stories around environment/sustainability/climate change

  • How your culture interacts with the environment
  • Aspects of subsistence living
  • The importance of nature in everyday life in the islands
  • Resilience in the face of natural disasters
  • Conservation efforts already underway and the difference they have made
  • The impacts of climate change on your community, and how these can be mitigated

These are ideas but any stories within this theme are acceptable

Theme Stream 2 - Stories around cultural heritage/ identity / keeping cultural connections in a modern world

  • Stories about everyday life that embed traditional knowledge or values
  • A historical story unique to your country/island/village
  • Retelling traditional myths and legends
  • Aspects of indigenous knowledge that need to be preserved: eg agricultural practices, traditional medicine, handicraft making etc

These are ideas but any stories within this theme are acceptable
