Electricity Commission Notice
Electricity Tariff increase effective from 1 April 2022
The Competent Authority has approved an increase in the regulated price of diesel effective 18 March 2022. This has contributed to an increase of 32.3 seniti per litre as from January 2022 to March 2022.
As a result, this has increased in the tariff by 6.90 seniti per kWh (7.6%). In fact the total electricity tariff will increase from the current 91.01 seniti per kWh to 97.91 seniti per kWh.
The new starting tariff of 97.91 seniti/kWh is the new electricity tariff to adopt by Tonga Power Limited and will be reviewed on a quarterly basis with respect to the movement in diesel prices and also on an annual basis according to the movements in inflation.
The overall Power Generation from Renewable Energy (RE) Sources is average from 14-16% of TPL total monthly power generation to which its impact on their prices is included on this tariff calculation
HOWEVER, the Government continued to subsidize the ‘Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme’.
- The discounted tariff of 6.90 seniti per/kWh is to apply to the regulated tariff of 91.01 seniti per/kWh, to all power customers consumed excess of 150 kwh/month including commercial businesses to residential, to maintain the approved previous electricity tariff at 91.01 seniti per/kWh.
- The discounted tariff of 11.00 seniti per/kWh is to apply to the regulated tariff of 91.01 seniti per/kWh, only to the power customers consumed between 0-150 kwh/month to reduce the electricity tariff. The Government increases the kilowatts hour used by consumers from 100 kWh to 150 kWh.
The Electricity Commission has APPROVED the new ‘Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme’ and Subsidy offered by Government to all power consumers effective for the Electricity consumption from 1 April 2022. The revised tariff rates approved by the Electricity Commission are as follows: -
NOTE: The Electricity Tariff is regulated by the Electricity Act and administered by the Electricity Commission. A process set down in the Concession Agreement between Tonga Power Limited and the Electricity Commission determines the tariff adjustment. The Competent Authority is the Tongan Government Agency whom sets the landed price of diesel which Tonga Power Limited uses for their power generation.
