The Electricity Commission has approved the new electricity tariff for the power consumption and with Government “Lifeline Contribution to Tariff” at TPL effective on 1st October 2021.
The ADO price of diesel for power generation has kept its price increases since the month of June as approved by Competent Authority. It increased by 5.53 seniti per litre in July, increased again by 2.30 seniti per litre in August and decrease by 1.56 seniti per litre for September 2021. The new ADO price for September was effective on 20th September 2021.
As a result, this has increased the cost of fuel required for power generation by 3.41 seniti per kWh (4.2%). In fact the total electricity tariff will increase from the current 80.71 seniti per kWh to 84.12 seniti per kWh.
The new starting tariff of 84.12 seniti/kWh is the new electricity tariff to adopt by Tonga Power Limited, and will be review on a quarterly basis with respect to the movement in diesel prices and also on an annual basis according to the movements in inflation. The overall Power Generation from Renewable Energy (RE) Sources is average from 14-16% of TPL total monthly power generation to which its impact on their prices is included on this tariff calculation
However, the Government continued to subsidize the ‘Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme’ to maintain the 73.04 seniti per kWh by deducted discount of 11.08 seniti kWh. The discount only applies to those that using the electricity less than 100 kWh.

NOTE: The Electricity Tariff is regulated by the Electricity Act and administered by the Electricity Commission. A process set down in the Concession Agreement between Tonga Power Limited and the Electricity Commission determines the tariff adjustment. The Competent Authority is the Tongan Government Agency whom sets the landed price of diesel (ADO) which Tonga Power Limited uses for their power generation.
