    : Apart from loss of agricultural food crops, some damage to schools, Ngu Hospital and HMAF Camp Fangatongo, Vava‘u has emerged from Cyclone Winston’s two close passes without significant damage to major infrastructure, an official assessment survey has concluded. Australia delivered 400 mosquito nets in partnership with the Tonga Red Cross Society to help control the spread of Zika virus after the cyclone.

    : "Malo and thank you!", was the feeling of most people in Vava‘u at the weekend, after escaping the worst of Tropical Cyclone Winston - one of the strongest cyclones to ever visit the region - when it passed Vava’u twice in one week, firstly on Monday February 15 and returning on Friday February 19, but without making as much damage as they feared it might.

    : Tongan USP students living in the Laucala Campus in Suva, Fiji, are safe after Cyclone Winston left a path of destruction yesterday, 21 February 2016. However, USP students living in Labasa and Lautoka had not yet made contact and attempts to contact them were "futile" due to a nationwide power outage affecting communication, USP's Dr Masasso Paunga stated this morning. The Suva campus has closed.

    : Tropical Cyclone Winston, category 4, was continuing to move west, away from Tonga and Fiji, at 14km per hour (8 knots) after directly hitting Fiji over the weekend with hurricane force winds. TC Winston is expected to remain a category 4 cyclone today and with a forecast track turning south to south east.

    : The latest Tropical Cyclone Advisory (No. 29) for Tonga on Tropical Cyclone Winston issued by the Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at 4.30 pm Friday, 19 February 2016 has downgraded a storm warning to gales for Vava'u, Niuatoputapu, Niuafo’ou and Ha’apai. A strong wind warning remains in force for Tongatapu and ‘Eua.

    : The causeway at Foa in Ha’apai was closed off early this morning due to high tidal waves brought by Tropical Cyclone Winston (cat. 4) located north east of Vava'u. Evacuation centers were opened to people on the outer islands of Vava'u and Ha'apai, housing thousands of people overnight.

    : The very large Tropical Cyclone Winston (Cat. 4) currently has hurricane force winds across its 150kms diameter and the intensifying storm might become a high Cat. 4 – or even Cat. 5, sometime before midday Friday, north of Vava’u, warns Tonga Met. NEMO was meeting this afternoon and may possibly declare a state of emergency for Tonga later today, based on emerging models of the intensifying and dangerous storm.

    : Tonga’s island groups of Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua escaped major damage from Tropical Cyclone Winston as it passed through Tonga yesterday and today, Tuesday, 16 February with winds gusts of 120km. Forecasters warn that the cyclone, now Cat. 3, is intensifying to the north east of Vava'u and may return for another pass through Tonga over the next few days.
