    : Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva has apologised to the Chinese community in Tonga and especially to individuals who have been victims of violent crimes, the Chinese Embassy said in a statement today. The Ambassador said that Chinese in Tonga still faced many difficulties and challenges. Crimes against the Chinese community happened frequently in 2016 and some brutal cases remained unsolved.

    : Cargo throughput increased by 15% in 2016 compared to the previous year and this trend is expected to continue during major construction projects in the country, the Ports Authority Tonga stated in its 2016 Annual Report released today. Container throughput hit a record high and ships calls increased by 19% during the same period.     : The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a preliminary statement this week that Tonga’s “economic activity is expanding and likely to remain relatively strong into the next couple of years”. However, the IMF found that there was a lack of recent statistical information available such as government finance, inflation, balance of payments, and national accounts data for their assessment of economic development.
