Breast cancer ranks as one of the top 20 causes of death in Tonga and the rate is higher here than in the developed countries because women are leaving it too late to come forward for detection and treatment, speakers at the launch of "Pink October" for public awareness said this morning. A Vaiola Hospital surgeon Dr Saia Piukala called for traditional and religious healers and all Tongans to become involved in the talanoa on breast cancer in order to save more lives. After years of living with candle-light, two families in the Sopu area of Nuku‘alofa, were overjoyed to receive the first electric lights in their homes, after a Tongan grandmother Siutiti Halatoa (51) who trained in solar engineering in India last year, installed the first solar panels under a community led project, this morning May 8.

Two mothers from 'Isileli, a swamp community on the western fringes of Nuku'alofa, received the biggest surprise of their lives on Monday when an hour into a community meeting about setting up a solar power project, they were selected to go and study at Barefoot College, India, for six months, to learn solar power installation, with all expenses to be paid for by the Indian government.
