Tonga’s recent certification of the MA60 aircraft for its domestic air service did not involve the Pacific Aviation Safety Office or New Zealand Authorities, according to New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Hon. Murray McCully today.

Tonga’s grounded MA60 aircraft is expected to resume its domestic air service this week, operated by Real Tonga, Tevita Palu, the airline’s CEO told Matangi Tonga yesterday, 8 August. However, it is still not clear whether or not the aircraft has been certified by an internationally recognized certification authority.

Nuku’alofa’s Central Business district was buzzing with visitors looking for something to do on Wednesday, 9 March with the arrival of hundreds of passengers onboard the P&O’s Pacific Aria. The cruise ship arrived from Noumea in the morning, left Nuku’alofa later in the day for Neiafu.

The completion of a USD$28 million upgrade of Tonga’s two international airports at Fua’amotu and in Vava’u at the end of January, will encourage more international airlines to come to Tonga, with the first 777 aircraft expected in April and a new Vava’u-Fiji link to also start in April.
