A 48-year-old man has been charged with indecently assaulting a 10-year-old girl at Ma’ufanga.

Police are concerned with a significant amount of firearms and ammunition that have been smuggled into Tonga and the risks they pose to community safety, a Deputy Police Commissioner warned today, after more seizures of ammunition and cannabis were made by Tonga Police on April 30, at different locations in Tongatapu.

Tonga Police has called off a search and rescue operation for Litani Taufa, who was lost at sea on Tuesday, April 23.

Litani Taufa, missing at sea since Tuesday morning, has not been located, Tonga Police reported at 1:00pm today. A Search and Rescue operation is continuing along the eastern Tongatapu coastline, where the body of Captain Sam Tatafu and their overturned boat was located early yesterday.

The body of a well-known sea captain Samuela Tatafu, who was reported missing at sea yesterday with Litani Taufa, was recovered today on the rugged southeast coast of Tongatapu 24 April.

Police revealed yesterday that Tonga’s Drug Enforcement Taskforce charged a 34-year-old man from Tofoa after Quarantine officers intercepted over 242 grams of cannabis seeds being brought into the Kingdom at Fua’amotu International Airport on March 30. They did not reveal the flight or country of origin.

The 32-year-old woman who was arrested with 20 packs of cannabis on April 10 is still in custody to appear at the Magistrate’s Court on April 17.

A couple was arrested with seven packs of methamphetamine at a motel in Kolofo’ou on Monday, April 15.

A 32-year-old woman from the Liahona area was arrested after being found with 20 packs of cannabis and 95 live ammunition on April 10.
