A land and maritime search is underway in Ha'apai for a 62-year-old man who was reported missing at sea, after leaving Faleloa, Ha'apai in a 25ft boat on Saturday, 6 April. After Afuhia Fehoko from Fakakakai failed to arrive home, a search began on Sunday.

Tonga Fire & Emergency Services were fighting a large fire, early this afternoon, that was engulfing a warehouse storing Chinese imported products, at Fangaloto, Tongatapu. Black smoke covered the area and could be seen from the CBD in Nuku'alofa.

The Lulutai Airline's Saab 340 aircraft slid off the taxiway at the Fua'amotu Domestic Airport with a full load passengers, early this afternoon, hitting a low concrete wall, after it earlier aborted landing at the Lupepau’u Airport in Vava’u. Early reports say there were no injuries, but passengers were screaming after a landing gear collapsed. One man was carried off the plane by responding soldiers.

About 50 Tongan pilgrims, who were stranded in Israel amid the Hamas attacks launched over the weekend, are reported to be safe during the ongoing conflict. Tonga's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today they are in collaboration with the Tonga High Commission in London, (Tonga's accredited diplomatic mission to Israel), and are working to ensure the safety of Tongan nationals who are currently in Israel.

A driver escaped from his car before it was gutted by fire this morning on Vuna Road close to the gates of the Cowley residence. Deputy Fire Commissioner, Sinamoni Kauvaka, in an update this afternoon, said fire fighters responded to the blaze, at around 7:14 am. “a witness who was driving behind this Mazda car...noticed a spark under the car so he overtook the Mazda and warned him”.

Only underground water supplied by the Tonga Water Board may be used for bottled water that is processed in Tonga, to sell for public consumption, the Ministry of Health said on Monday, Jan 17. The restriction was introduced following the volcanic eruption at Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai islands on Jan. 15, which spread tons of ash over Tonga, affecting water tanks collection. Meanwhile, some water processing companies had filtered water reserves in their tanks that was in heavy demand after the eruption.

The people evacuated from Mango island in Ha'apai are being brought to Tongatapu, to relieve pressure on Nomuka, where the whole population of Mango were moved last week, the new Prime Minister Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, said on Friday Jan. 21, at his second public briefing, following the Hunga Tonga - Hunga Ha‘apai volcanic eruption and tsunamis that hit Tonga on Saturday Jan. 15. The government has declared two States of Emergency for the whole of Tonga, and outlined their responses during the briefing. By Matangi Tonga reporters.
