The 7th Contingent of His Majesty’s Armed Forces (Royal Tongan Marines) returned from Afghanistan last week, after completing their six-months of duty at Camp Bastion and Leatherneck in Afghanistan.

Tonga’s army has entered a formal partnership program with the National Guard of Nevada that will strengthen their military cooperation in a new working relationship. The partnership declaration was signed in Nuku'alofa on April 11, by Brigadier General Tau'aika 'Uta'atu of His Majesty's Armed Forces and Brigadier General William Burks of the National Guard of the State of Nevada, USA.

US Marines were angered by allegations first published in The Washington Post in April that troops from the Pacific island of Tonga were known to fall asleep while on post in the towers at Bastion. However, a US Central Command Memo has found that there was no evidence to suggest that was the case the night of the attack by Taliban insurgents in September 2012 on Camp Bastion, Afghanistan. In fact, the Tongan guards had different guard procedures than the Marines and Tower 17, the one nearest to the breach point that had guards, did not have a good vantage point of it

When Taliban fighters infiltrated Camp Bastion between Towers 16 and 15 in September 2012, Tower 16 was not manned - and was not supposed to be manned by Tongans, Captain Toni Fonokalafi, the Acting Commander of the Tongan Armed Forces said, in answering criticism of Tongan soliders serving in Afghanistan that appeared in US news media, attributed to senior US military sources, last week.

Ika Moana 2013, a new multi-national maritime surveillance exercise, led by the Tonga Defence Services (Navy) to combat illegal fishing and crime at sea has over the past 10-days enforced law in Tonga's Exclusive Economic Zone. The surveillance could become an annual exercise after it ends on Friday, September 20.

Tonga’s 13th and final military contingent deployed to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) returned to Tonga on Monday, July 29. RAMSI marked its 10th year anniversary last week in Honiara ending the military component of the mission from Participating Forces.

Tonga's fourth contingent of 55 soldiers to Afghanistan returned safely to Tonga on Friday 16 November, after six-months duty in Helmand Province, under a NATO led-mission. Medals of recognition will be presented to the contingent by Rt Hon. Andrew Robathan MP, the Minister of State for the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, at Taliai Camp, Fua'amotu, on Thursday 22 November.
