Tonga's Energy Minister Hon. Poasi Tei in Beijing, China, recently thanked the Government of China for donating the 2.25 Megawatt wind power station in Tongatapu under the Belt and Road Initiatives. Tonga is one of the 29 global membership of BREP, and the only representative from the Pacific.

Wind power energy may be the next big source of renewable energy, after solar energy, to help reduce Tonga’s heavy reliance on diesel for power generation. Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is preparing to carry out a six-months feasibility study on wind power.

On June 24, in Abu Dhabi, IRENA and the Kingdom of Tonga will hold an official Signing Ceremony of the IRENA Abu Dhabi Declaration on the Tonga Energy Road Map 2010-20. The ceremony is an important milestone in the successful, on-going partnership between IRENA and the Pacific Kingdom. That partnership has resulted in Tonga going from being almost 100% dependent on imported diesel for electrical generation, to having one of the most ambitious energy plans in the world.
