Tonga is among 26 delegations attending the 19th Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), session in Da Nang, Vietnam, from 28 November to 3 December, where they will review its activities, and put forward policies and measures to manage tuna fishing in the region.

Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) have threatened to pull out of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) if the fishing nations and coastal states who make its membership fail to agree on new rules for all-important tropical tuna. Current rules for the fishery – known as the Tropical Tuna Measure – expire at the end of this year.

Tropical tuna fishing needs to be controlled says a disappointed Pacific Island Tuna Industries Association (PITIA) this week, charging the Western & Central Pacific Fishery Commission (WCPFC) with failing to protect the interests of Pacific Islands tuna industries and leaving the southern albacore longline fishery “open for another year of plundering.”

Overfishing of tuna in the Pacific Islands has led to calls to substantially reduce fishing effort for Big-eye and Bluefin and to introduce strengthened catch limits for Albacore. Meeting in Cairns, Australia this week, Pacific islands delegates to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) are renewing their efforts for sustainable management of tuna stocks.
