A group of 23 United States Peace Corps volunteers were sworn-in today, at the Epworth Hall, Nuku'alofa, before they take up assignments teaching English in primary and secondary schools in Tongatapu and some of the outer islands.

Hemaloto Makafilia (23) and Sailosi Lau’i (21) who were arrested and charged for the brutal attack of a 56-year-old American woman, the United States Peace Corps Director in Nuku’alofa in July, were denied bail by the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court on Monday, 5 September.

A group of 15 new US Peace Corps volunteers for Tonga were sworn in today, November 9, by the US Ambassador to Tonga HE Frankie Reed, at the Vakaloa Beach Resort in Kanokupolu. Peace Corps also announced that its country directors in Tonga, Samoa and Fiji are to be replaced by a a Regional Director.

Today US Peace Corps representatives presented the Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC), Women's Youth Caucus, with a cheque for TOP$3,490 to fund the Kemi 'Uluakaua: Gender, Health, and HIV Leadership Camp for Female Youth to be held from 1-8 June 2005, in Ha'apai.
