Since the appointment of Commander Chris Kelley, and based on public perception of his impeccable performance, he has been instrumental in restoring both local and overseas faith in local law and order - the foundation that must be laid before any society can talk prosperity. - E.L. Saafi.

I write this letter with humble and sincere concern for the future and the development of Tourism in our Kingdom. I am just floored that "private" business owner(s) saw the need to stand their ground leading to the loss of the opportunity for the hit TV Show "Survivor" to be filmed in Vava'u. I do hope that the Producers of Survivor will see that their decision to pull the show from Tonga was based on the myopic view of a few and not the majority of our people. - Paul Tu'ivai.

Tonga's candidate to the Miss South Pacific Pagaent 2010, Mafi Tu'inukuafe was immaculate. She was a real gem for the event and surprised many of the audience with her character, charm, wit and beauty. If ever Tonga needed someone to boost its image at a time like this, she was a godsend and she made me even prouder to be a Tongan in Papua New Guinea. - John Paul Chapman.

I recently visited Tonga and was surprised to find out that our very own 'Tonga Visitors Bureau' and Ministry of Tourism, had taken the lead in misguiding our visitors arriving in our poor Kingdom, with the map displayed out in their front yard. - Leonaitasi Taukafa

A couple of days after talking with Kathy Marks, a friend sent me the article she had written on Tonga. It was titled "The last king of Tonga?"...What bothered me greatly were the gross inaccuracies in Ms. Marks' article, which proved the Pacific-wide sentiment against whirlwind, parachute journalists. These are the journalists who fly into a place with their knowledge limited to the biased writings of other fellow parachute journalists, and they talk to a few locals to try and confirm that bias. - Kalafi Moala

Kolomotu'a's pig owners are weird, come to think about it. Families secure themselves and their property in and feed their pigs outside of their fence. So, the rest of the village of Kolomotu'a is their piggery. Hange pe 'oku pe he ha me'a. This is when the "gentlemen's rule" should be the obvious solution. - Mafi 'o Amerika Samoa

I began reading with interest the Transparency International press release published on your website yesterday...but after seeing Tonga's entry in this list at 175, just ahead of Haiti, Iraq, Myanmar and Somalia, but behind Afghanistan, Bangladesh, etc. I have lost all respect for this organization's work. - Rob Solomon

It is enlightening to hear the expressed views of overseas Tongans as highlighted in Mangisi's article, (Education for export, a new perspective, 26/4). Mangisi is expressing a very real concern against the plight of Tonga and the unpredictability in its current economic and political stagnation. Let me therefore offer a different perspective to what Mangisi have already stated. - Jason Faletau

Tofaeono Misatauveve says that Tonga is the "only remaining Pacific kingdom" but this is not so. In the Wallis and Futuna Islands there are three kingdoms, Uvea, Sigave and Alo. They may not be as well known as Tonga but they are still Pacific kingdoms. - John Blyth

Every decent thinking person in the Pacific should be proud of the Tongan monarchy and make every reasonable attempt to help maintain it. As well, every true Tongan Kingdom subject must be really happy to call him or herself a Tongan and make every reasonable attempt to respect the system their forefathers had achieved from the past. - Tofaeono Misatauveve

The fact that Tonga was never colonized has made Tonga unique and different from her neighboring islands. It is a source of pride for Tongans in the years gone by, so much so, that many of the Tongan poets have lines like: "Taha pe 'i he tahi saute", "Kei toe pe 'a felenite", etc, etc. Certainly, things would be much different now if that famous meeting at Pouono to decide on which colonial power to give Tonga to, came out with something different. - Sailosi Finau

I came across your website for the first time approximately 3-4 years ago, and since then, it has been very educational and entertaining. As such, it has been a tremendous pleasure for me to utilize the same to learn more about our Kingdom Island. ... I hope that the on-going political changes in the Kingdom Island will bring hope, fairness, and chance for the poor people of Tonga to live comfortably- just like their superiors. How can the government and its high officials sleep well at night, knowing their people are suffering?. - Joe

It is always a blessing to be in Tonga for the Po Le'o and the Uike Lotu. I cannot describe the warmth in my heart to walk up once again to the front of my village church and fe'iloaki with the kau Malanga Pole'o as well as everyone else in the village church. - Sailosi Finau

I am alarmed that the current Prince Regent, Lavaka Ata has lost touch with reality and of family sense with this insensitive misjudgement. With Christmas gone and New Year coming, Lavaka Ata has just opened more doors to more enemies over some Royal Cow! Now, we've got Tongans and Samoans having a legitimate reason for his resignation. - William Mariner

I thank Sefita Hao'uli for his effort for an informal stocktake of our national image through the brand Tonga and Tongan. An attempt to carry out this exercise has to touch on our history and it has some unavoidable limitations but here is my peni taha for the mix. - Sailosi Finau

Ever wondered how the brand "Tonga" or "Tongan" is doing these days? And I mean how are we doing internationally and how do we regard ourselves locally? - Sefita Hao'uli
