Scenic Hotels left Tonga abruptly two weeks ago after 8 years in their facility near the airport. Whether it was a problem with their landlord, their partner, or their own decision; one thing is clear – they were not making money and except for walking away from a large investment did not appear to be unhappy to leave Tonga. - Dean Bishoprick

Economic forecasts show that while the Tongan economy is expected to grow by 3.1 % in the current financial year up to 30 June 2017, it will not maintain that growth rate.

A waning commitment by the Tongan government to reform has caused delays in grants for budget support and raises concerns regarding long-term fiscal sustainability, the Asian Development Bank warns in the December 2015 issue of the Pacific Economic Monitor - Budget Analysis. Tonga's budget plans for FY2016 will see another large increase in public spending.

Running a business in Tonga is getting harder, according to a new World Bank report titled “Doing Business 2015”. The annual report assesses the “ease of doing business” in countries across the world. Tonga's ranking was dragged down by poor ratings for property registration, difficulties in resolving insolvency and poor shareholder rights.

A need to continue to improve the business environment in Tonga and to bolster confidence is stressed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its 2014 country report for Tonga released today, which also notes that the Tongan economy is rebounding supported by agricultural exports and post-cyclone reconstruction activity.

The Tongan economy will grow by only 0.3% in 2014, according to the Asian Development Bank Outlook ADO Update 2013 that was published this week. Tonga’s economic growth has been on a downward spiral since 2011.
