Tonga's power tariffs have decreased by 4.66 seniti per kWh from 85.86 seniti per kWh to 81.20 seniti per kWh, from 1July 2017. This represents a 5.4% reduction in tariff from last quarter.

A significant increase in the regulated price of diesel has been approved by the Competent Authority effective 16 January 2017. This has contributed to an increase of 15.40 seniti per litre (13.8%) from $1.1124 per litre in September 2016 to $1.2664 per litre in January 2017, Tonga Power Ltd. announced today. Tonga's Minister for Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei received a dividend cheque of $4,345,262 pa'anga, presented by the Chairman of the Common Utilities Board of Directors, Carl Sanft on November 29. The Combined Utility Dividend for the year 2016 goes to the Government of Tonga, being the sole shareholder of power, water and waste utilities and the subsidiary companies Tonga Gas Ltd. and Home Gas Ltd.

The Ha'apai solar farm project - an on-grid project which will become the first utility scale solar energy generation facility in Ha’apai - was visited yesterday by Australian Minister, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and her delegation who were welcomed by Tonga Power Ltd. staff and the Governor of Ha'apai, Mo’ale Finau. Australia has contributed AUD$5.7 million towards Tonga's Outer Islands Renewable Energy Project in co-financing with the Asian Development Bank and the European Union.

A $10 million pa'anga project to build the largest solar energy plant in Tongatapu, follows the signing of a long term Power Purchase Agreement between Tonga Power Ltd. and a Chinese power producer on September 12, 2016, for the construction and commissioning of a 2 Megawatt solar facility at at Mata-ki-‘Eua, which is expected to be fully operational by mid-2017.

Tonga’s current electricity tariffs will be cut by 11% on meter readings from 1 March, bringing tariffs down to 69.99 seniti per unit - the lowest since 2008, the CEO of Tonga Power Ltd., Robert Matthews, announced on 25 February, and the benefits will be passed on to all electricity consumers in Tongatapu, Vava’u, ‘Eua and Ha’apai.
