Higher imported and domestic prices have driven increasing inflation in Tonga. In the year to August 2021 inflation rose by 7.0%, the National Reserve Bank of Tonga reported. Annually, foreign reserves increased, resulting from more receipts of budget support, project funds, and remittances.

Tonga’s official foreign reserve continued to grow as the National Reserve Bank of Tonga recorded an increase of $26.8 million for the month of June. The reserves rose to $468.7 million, equivalent to 8.1 months of imports.

Tonga has accumulated a Foreign Reserve of $311.7 million pa’anga at the end of September, while its domestic inflation rate was 3.2% for September, according to the latest figures on the National Reserve Bank of Tonga website.
