Charges have been laid against 147 accused students and ex-students from Tupou College, who have each been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit willful damage to a building in regards to an attack at a home in Tofoa on Thursday night, July 18. Tonga Police said 75 were released on bail to July 29, while 72 accused remained in custody. New charges may be laid later.

A Tonga College ex-student Taniela Halahuni (22) remains in a coma on a ventilator at Vaiola Hospital, after sustaining severe head injuries in an alleged student attack at a home in Tofoa on the night of Thursday, July 18.

A Tonga College student is now in a critical condition in Vaiola Hospital, after sustaining serious head injuries last night during an attack by a rival group of students who targeted a home where he stayed at Tofoa.

Kalafitoni Latu, the Principal of Tonga College ‘Atele, apologized yesterday for the vicious beating of students by a prefect at the all boys school in a 2011 incident. The incident was captured on video and appeared on the internet last week.

The Tonga Police are investigating evidence of a brutal beating of young male students by another male student, said to be a prefect, in a corporal punishment rite captured on a grainy video that was posted on the internet You-Tube last week and quickly spread to other webpages.

While fears are held for the safety of a missing 15 year old Tonga College student, Timote Kata, from Houma, who failed to return from a fishing trip at Te'ekiu on Monday evening, police remain hopeful of finding him alive as a search enters its second day along the Hihifo sand flats and mangrove coast.
