A new landing barge that can transfer vehicles, cargo and passengers to beaches and islands that do not have wharves, was launched in Nuku'alofa on Saturday 10 July. Its operators hope that the government will support continuing shipping services to the two Niuas and also to smaller outer islands.

The Bank South Pacific Tonga Limited made a net profit after income tax of $9.881 million pa'anga for the year ending 31 December 2020, the Directors declared in a key disclosure statement summary today. This compared to a profit of $11.155 million in 2019. Net Operating Income declined during the year 2020 under COVID-19 restrictions.

Tenants at the Small Industries Centre (SIC) who were hit with commercial rent and lease increases before Christmas, sent a petition to the Prime Minister yesterday afternoon, January 7, protesting the massive increases, which they say range from about 70% to over 200%.

We urge the government to lift the six weeks old restrictions on bars, clubs and restaurants. While the borders remain closed, why must we stay closed? Tonga has numerous vibrant national resources that are fast asleep when they should be generating revenues and driving enterprise. Looking at the trade development of the small Pacific island countries one wonders whether Fiji is one of those that became birds, while Tonga remains among those still crawling.
