Three Tongan swimmers set new national records at the 15th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at the Etihad Arena, Abu Dhabi from December 16 – 21. Finau Ohuafi, Charissa Panuve, and Noelani Day swam against the world’s elite swimmers in the Butterfly, Freestyle, and Backstroke events.

Tongan athletes from nine sporting disciplines will begin training in China next month as part of a new aid project called the "China Aid Project on Sports Technical Assistance to Tonga-2018”. The training initiative for about 100 athletes and coaches occurs at a crucial point – just eight months before the 2019 Pacific Games are scheduled to begin in Samoa on 7 July, 2019.

A man aged in his 30s drowned on Wednesday, December 14 when he tried to save a 13-year-old boy who was being sucked into a hole on a fringing reef, while swimming at Fotua Beach in Kala’au, Tongatapu, during a camping trip by LDS youth of Te'ekiu.

Tongan swimmer Amini Tuitavake Fonua (26) came fifth in Heat 1 with a time of 1:06.40 in the 100 metres Men's Breaststroke event at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday August 6. The best 8 of 46 swimmers will go through to the next phase. No one from Amini's heat will go through to the Olympic final.
