Fasi mo e Afi, Tonga
It is quite special that this year all the planets are easily visible and also in a configuration which happens infrequently. In December 2020, Jupiter and Saturn will come closer together, until their great conjunction on 22 December 7:37 Tonga time. It will be a spectacular phenomenon, a few days before Christmas. They will do so again in 2080 but then for centuries to come, not any more. A long time ago, in 14AD there was, interestingly, a great conjunction on 25 December. By Firitia Velt.

Oceania's Humpback whale population is slowly recovering, but it will take three decades before the population will fully recover from its near extinction levels in the 1960s, according to an assessment by the South Pacific Whale Research Consortium (SPWRC).

The recurrence of abundant “seaweed blooms” are a growing concern on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji as beaches become increasingly affected with the algae. A Pacific-wide discussion by internet forum is underway this month, January 2013, to find out how far this problem extends across Pacific communities to help determine if it is caused by climate change.

The opening date for the new Vuna Wharf, reconstructed at a cost of $30 million and scheduled for early 2012, remains uncertain, with work still to be done around the wharf site before it can open for business. Mosese Lavemai, the CEO of the Nuku'alofa Port Authority, said on February 1, that although the reconstruction of the actual wharf was completed ahead of schedule in December 2011, additional work needed to be completed around the wharf before a date is set for an opening.

Call me a whale-watcher if you like but ‘Ofa-ki-Tonga's enthusiasm for whalemeat for the kingdom is unlikely to find favour in this part of the world where killing whales and dolphins for food is seen as barbaric. The recent Japanese success at the IWC was made possible by support from some Pacific nations who took money and changed their stance. And here in New Zealand there is a call for retribution through the withdrawl of aid or something similar. - Sefita Hao‘uli
