The Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) has decided to focus on two main goals in its August 2023 Monetary Policy Statement (MPS): first, to keep inflation below the 5% reference rate, including through seeking Government’s assistance in controlling domestic and wage inflation; and second, to provide targeted support towards economic recovery of vulnerable sectors to address supply shortages and promote business investments.

Tonga's National Reserve Bank is moving to enforce the Moneylenders Act by registering all businesses who are conducting lending services in Tonga. The deadline for registration closed on Friday, January 29 and the NRBT said moneylenders who had not registered in time may face legal action.

Tonga’s official foreign reserve continued to grow as the National Reserve Bank of Tonga recorded an increase of $26.8 million for the month of June. The reserves rose to $468.7 million, equivalent to 8.1 months of imports.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a preliminary statement this week that Tonga’s “economic activity is expanding and likely to remain relatively strong into the next couple of years”. However, the IMF found that there was a lack of recent statistical information available such as government finance, inflation, balance of payments, and national accounts data for their assessment of economic development.

The Pacific International Commercial Bank (PICB) is challenging last week’s decision made by Tonga’s National Reserve Bank to shut it down. “We will urgently take legal action against the National Reserve Bank of Tonga for the cancellation of our operating license,” said Mishka Tu'ifua, General Manager and Director of PICB today, 2 August.
