Tonga's National Reserve Bank is moving to enforce the Moneylenders Act by registering all businesses who are conducting lending services in Tonga. The deadline for registration closed on Friday, January 29 and the NRBT said moneylenders who had not registered in time may face legal action.

Many of Tonga's businesses are already facing a cash crunch and looking to scale back their operations, as the impact of the CoViD-19 pandemic bites, the Tonga Chamber of Commerce and Industries (TCCI) stated today. While the National Reserve Bank of Tonga has reassured Tongans that our banking system is strong enough to withstand the impact of CoViD-19, but economic growth will be lower for the year.

A "hopeless" statement of claim filed by the Pacific International Commercial Bank Ltd (PICB) against the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) was struck out by the Lord Chief Justice, who awarded the Reserve Bank indemnity costs in a Supreme Court civil ruling.

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga has recommenced the pay out of claims by depositors and creditors of the former Pacific International Commercial Bank. In a statement on August 11, the NRBT said that payments may be collected from the NRBT. The license of the PICB was revoked by the Reserve Bank on July 26.

At its meeting today, the Board of Directors of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga agreed to reduce the Statutory Required Reserves Ratio from 12.5% to 10% effective from April 2, 2007. The decision was made against a background of tight liquidity in the banking system.
