A jury today convicted a suspended Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Justice on the count of causing the death of a woman while driving under the influence of alcohol at the Nuku’alofa Supreme Court. He was released on bail for sentencing on November 1.

A Supreme Court judge in Tonga, in jailing a tearful embezzler on September 6 said the crime had become commonplace in Tonga. “Embezzlement has to stop,” said Mr Justice Charles Cato, who warned stakeholders to address the problem before it was too late and companies would not operate in Tonga. “Corruption at any level or shape in Tonga needs to be wiped out,” he said.

The six accused men facing manslaughter charges in relation to the death of New Zealand Police Officer Kali Fungavaka in custody, are to be tried in two separate trials starting early next year, 2014. Five accused policemen are to be first tried by a judge alone, before the civilian faces a jury trial, at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.
