Climate Workshop

Tongan meteorologists joined a 4-day sub-regional workshop aimed at building a better understanding of climate and its influence and delivering targeted climate services to vulnerable communities. The training was held at Tanoa Hotel, Nuku'alofa, on 27 March 2023.

Tonga’s Director of Meteorology, ‘Ofa Fa’anunu has been re-elected for another four-years as President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Region V, at their virtual session held from September 1-3. "Our challenges are quite unique in the sense that we are in charge of monitoring the atmosphere and the ocean in a very large area of mostly ocean," he said.

Tropical Cyclone Cyril, category 1 centre [987hpa] was located about 15 miles southwest of Vava'u or about 150 miles north-northeast of Nuku'alofa at 6:00 am this morning, 7 February 2012. Cyril is moving east-southeast at 18 knots, a Special Weather Bulletin from the RSMC - Nadi Tropical Cyclone Centre warns.

A tropical cyclone alert remains in force for Ha'apai, Vava'u and Tongatapu group. A strong wind warning remains in force for all Tonga land areas and coastal waters. Tropical depression 11f located near Lifuka, west of Tonga, is moving towards the east-southeast at 12 knots or about 22 km/hours. The depression may develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 12 or 24 hours, Tonga's Meteorological Service warned in its Special Weather Bulletin at 6:20am today.
