Australian police telephone interceptions, outside of Tongan law in drugs case

Tonga’s Solicitor General, ‘Aminiasi Kefu, said today that the Crown was dropping drugs charges against Lord Tu’ilakepa because of the complexity of the case, and also because key evidence gathered from telephone interceptions was done outside of the Tongan law.

Two Tongan Lords to appear in court

A Preliminary Inquiry of the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga Lord Tu’iha’ateiho, who has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm without a license will be held on February 22. Meanwhile Lord Tu’ilakepa’s appeal against a Magistrate ruling will be heard on January 30.

Tu'ilakepa seeks delay in illegal arms and ammunition inquiry

A preliminary inquiry in an illegal arms and ammunition case against Lord Tu’ilakepa, a former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, is now anticipated for sometime early next year, depending on the outcome of his appeal lodged on Friday last week.

Lord Tu'ilakepa case adjourned for appeal

Lord Tu’ilakepa, a former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga who is facing multiple charges of conspiracy to the importation of illicit drugs and illegal possession of firearms, had his case adjourned yet again. He is appealing against a decision by a Magistrate, for the Preliminary Inquiry to be held on 27 November.

Four Tongan Lords charged in pending cases

Four Tongan Lords, including the current Speaker of Parliament, a former Speaker of Parliament, a current Noble’s Representative to Parliament and a Law Lord each have pending court cases in Tonga’s courts, after being charged with offences ranging from illicit drugs to illegal possession of firearms, ammunitions, and perjury.
