A New Zealand Barrister and mediator, James Christopher LaHatte, will be the new Anti-corruption Commissioner for Tonga. His appointment was approved by the King in Privy Council, the Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku told the Legislative Assembly, yesterday 4 April, 2024.

The composition of Tonga's Cabinet and Parliament remains in the most disordered state we have witnessed since the nation embarked on a democratic reform process in 2010. While uncertainties remain in the forefront, the big task ahead for cabinet and parliament is the National Annual Budget to be passed before 1 July. For historical reasons, this year it's no ordinary budget.

Tonga's Parliament struggled to make decisions on two important issues before its 2016 session closed on Thursday, 27 October. The House was trying to establish new procedures for a parliamentary Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister and his Cabinet. The other difficult issue was who will hold the ultimate power to appoint an Anti-corruption Commissioner for Tonga. From the House, by Pesi Fonua.
