A direction on the Tongan Supreme Court on how to process a civil case that was brought by the former Attorney General, John Cauchi against the Kingdom of Tonga is expected to be announced today, Friday, January 31. The trial by jury was halted in November because the failure of all concerned to sufficiently prepare for the trial had left the court and the jury in an "impossible position," the Chief Justice has stated.

The changes to the Constitution [clause 23] regarding the ability to continue to sit in the assembly or hold any office means that a "convicted" person who is sentenced to less than 2 years can still sit in the assembly and hold office. This does send a rather odd message to the public and the world - that the Tongan house of parliament and the Cabinet will allow a convicted person, whose character is thereby reduced, to still hold office! - John Cauchi

After Tonga's Attorney General, John Cauchi SC handed over his letter of resignation to the Tongan Government, he today expressed his disappointment that after the government made the initial move to establish an independent Judiciary, it lacked the political will to make it work.
