The Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) volunteer program, known as (JOCV) Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, celebrated 50 years of service in Tonga on 23 November, with a function at the Tanoa Hotel. A total of 568 volunteers have served in Tonga, and four volunteers are currently in-country.

cheer for Tonga

We are worried about the people of Tonga. We former JICA volunteers created a song to cheer up the Tongan people affected by the January 15 events, and posted it on You Tube. Similarly in Japan 11 years ago. It is said that many years are still needed to care for the victims’ minds and regain the lost daily life. An $11 million pa’anga Intensive Care Unit with five beds for critically ill patients with infectious diseases, including COVID-19, will be installed at Vaiola Hospital by March 2022. It will also facilitate remote telemedicine consultations with ICU specialist doctors and nurses in Japan, and ICU training.

Tonga’s first photovoltaic solar facility to introduce a stabilising capacitor and micro-grid control system was technically handed-over as the Nanyo Boeki Kaisha Ltd., Japanese-lead consortium of contractors and project consultants, signed an agreement with Tonga Power Ltd. to mark the completion of the project.
