Results for General Election

The election of Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Poasi Tei, as Tongatapu No. 6 People’s Representative to the Legislative Assembly has been declared void by the Supreme Court, after he was found to have committed three acts of bribery, in the lead up to the November 2021 General Election. He is the fourth Member of Parliament and third Cabinet Minister whose election has been voided.

There are now 73 remaining, out of the initial 75 candidates registered in Tonga’s General Election scheduled for November 18. One man died, while the other withdrew his candidacy, both from Tongatapu 2 constituency.

With just two-months to go before Tongans head to the polls on 16 November, there are now around 57,000 plus voters who have registered, according to a provisional electoral roll published last week. This is a jump from the 51,447 voters in the last election.

Early unofficial results from Tongatapu polling places indicate a close contest for Tongatapu 3 constituency with three polling places topped by different candidates, Tevita Palu, Siaosi Sovaleni and Clive Edwards.

Tonga’s Electoral Boundaries Commission is proposing to alter the electoral boundaries of two Vava'u constituencies by moving 'Utui village from Vava'u #15 to Vava'u #16.

The Tongan Commoners tomorrow, November 25 will be given the opportunity in Tonga's Parliamentary Election to choose their 17 representatives to enter parliament. This is the first step in setting up a new government. The representatives that they elect tomorrow will become the decision makers in a second round of voting, which is the election of a Prime Minister to lead the country during the next four years. Guaranteeing equal rights for women in Tonga by endorsing CEDAW was not a commitment for four of the candidates running for election, who did not understand the Convention to End All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

After 7 pm this evening the results for Tongatapu have started coming in following polling in today's General Election to choose nine People's Representatives to the Tonga Legislative Assembly for the next three years, 2008-10.

Tonga's 2008 Parliamentary Election to be held on April 23 for the Nobles Representatives and April 24 for the People's Representatives is on schedule, according to the government electoral officer, Pita Vuki.
