A new investment of NZ$8 million from New Zealand’s finance commitment was committed to Tonga’s Climate Change Fund. “We anticipate it could include initiatives such as projects to strengthen the resilience of public infrastructure, enhance coastal protections, reduce reliance on fossil fuels for energy and transport, and develop sustainable agriculture and protection for biodiversity,” Hon. Nanaia Mahuta said today.

Additional financing from the World Bank will strengthen Tonga’s resilience to future disasters and climate-related emergencies. The board has approved US$19.5 million (approximately TOP46 million) in additional funding for disaster recovery and resilience projects in Tonga. Since 2018, multiple disasters including Gita, Harold and Hunga, have caused an estimated US$457 million in damages and loss for Tonga.

An Implementation Agreement for the extension and expansion of the Government Development Loan was signed on October 1 by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Finance, Balwyn Fa’otusia, and the CEO of the Tonga Development Bank, Leta Kami. The scheme will run for another five years up to 2025.

A renewable energy project to upgrade existing power distribution grid in Vava’u and 'Eua, to be completed by the end 2019, will get an additional USD$5 million from the Asian Development Bank. Half of the amount is a loan and the other half is a grant.
