New COVID-19 cases in Fiji continue to decline with 12 new cases reported between November 27-28 and zero cases on November 29, Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported. Fiji opened its borders today to fully vaccinated international travellers, repatriates and Fijians visiting families and friends.

The Tonga Government said today it is supporting Tongan nationals who remained stranded in Fiji, after Tonga closed its borders to repatriation flights from Fiji. It was responding to complaints from the group. They are among 2,608 Tongan nationals and residents who are stranded overseas by the suspension of repatriation flights to Tonga from COVID-19 affected countries.

Fiji has recorded 505 new cases of COVID-19 over a 24-hour period ending at 8:00am on August 31. There have also been seven new deaths from the virus, which has now claimed 496 lives in Fiji. However, new cases are falling from Fiji's highest daily average peak reported on July 22.

Two pregnant women in their early 30s from Lami were among the 21 new COVID-19 deaths in Fiji reported as new infections and deaths surge there. Neither of the pregnant women had been vaccinated. “Maternal deaths due to COVID-19 are a clear indication of the severity of this outbreak,” said Fiji Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong, who urged Fijians to stay at home.
