New research reveals the chances of the New Zealand South Island’s Alpine Fault generating a damaging earthquake in the next 50 years are much higher than previously thought. The probability of that earthquake occurring before 2068 is about 75 percent, says Dr Jamie Howarth of the Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington today in a published study.

Early warning systems on Raoul Island, one of New Zealand’s most integral sites for monitoring earthquakes and tsunami, will undergo critical repairs after an earthquake occurred in the area last Friday. The tidal gauge at Raoul provides critical early warning for the Pacific Islands. On March 5 a tsunami wave took about 44 minutes to travel between the Fishrock gauge and the Nuku'alofa gauge.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was felt on Tongatapu at 2:05 pm today. Tonga Meteorological Service reported that the earthquake was located 88km Southeast of Nuku'alofa at a depth of 83.9km. There is no tsunami threat to Tonga from this event.

There is no tsunami threat from an earthquake 7.1m in the Kermadec Island this morning Sunday 16 June 2019. Small tsunami waves were recorded at Raoul Island sea level gauges this afternoon. Minor sea level fluctuations may occur in some coastal areas near the earthquake over the next few hours, the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Ewa Beach Hawaii advised at 2352 UTC (12:52 pm Tonga time). Tonga Met has cancelled the tsunami warning at 2:28pm.

A short strong tremor was felt in Nuku'alofa this morning but no damage has been reported. The USGS Earthquake Information Center recorded a deep M5.4 earthquake centred 38km north east of Nuku'alofa at a local time of 11:41am.

A strong 7.4Mw tremor rattled Nuku'alofa before dawn for over a minute starting at 6:19am. Two aftershocks, including 6.6Mw were felt in Nuku'alofa after 10:00am. The first 7.4Mw earthquake was centred south of Fiji and Tonga at a depth of about 170km-208km in an area of the Tonga-Kermadec arc that has frequent moderate to large deep earthquakes. The deep earthquakes are generally less hazardous than shallow earthquakes.
