The Tongan parliament yesterday, July 28, passed a Bill, raising the alcoholic drinking age from 18 to 21 years old. Alcohol is blamed for fuelling violent behaviour by some teenagers. From the House, by Pesi Fonua

In light of the Government’’s success in adding "the cultural traditions of the Kingdom,"as a new conditionality on the freedom of speech and expression in Tonga, one can be forgiven for jumping to the conclusion that perhaps the Government wants the media and the Tongan people in general to revert to pre-Constitution Tongan standards in which back-chatting the chiefs was punishable by a serious flogging if not death. New Zealand's Maori Queen, Dame Te Arikuini Te Atairangikaahu visited Tonga twice recently to attend a wedding in the Tongan Royal Family, and the King's 85th birthday. "My grand aunty Princess Te Puea had a close connection with Queen Salote. I think the important thing was that when I came to Tonga I realised that Te Puea wanted me to have that relationship with the Pacific,” she told Matangi Tonga.
