Today, over 5000 competitors from nations as far afield as Malaysia to Jamaica converge on Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games. The Games is perhaps the most visible aspect of the Commonwealth for many of our 2.5 billion citizens. Less visible, and appreciated, is the potential of the Commonwealth to bolster trade, business and investment between our 56 members. Tonga could win every year through the Commonwealth advantage. The Commonwealth Games wrapped up on Sunday April 15 with the last two Tongan athletes competing in Shotput and Shooting on April 13-14 respectively. Shooter Henry Liutai did not qualify in the finals, however in Women's Shotput, Atamaama Tu'utafaiva qualified for the finals where she threw a personal best.

Commonwealth weightlifting gold medallist David Liti (of Tongan descent) was awarded the David Dixon Award for his sportsmanship in assisting a fellow injured weightlifter Lauititi Lui of Samoa. The David Dixon Award is a four-yearly award given to the outstanding athlete of each Commonwealth Games, based on their performance at the event, fair play, and overall contribution to their team's participation at the Commonwealth Games.
