The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Mr. Henry Puna, said China's security offering for the upcoming 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting to be held in Tonga from 26 - 30 August, this year, is not an issue for the Pacific. “This issue is a lot more complicated," he said, while warning the Pacific not be hindered by the “outsiders’ geo-political games”. Tonga has joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), becoming its 84th member at an official flag raising ceremony held at the AIIB headquarter in Beijing, China, on 5 February. The AIIB was established in 2016 with $100 billion capital. It was created with the purpose of serving as a regional financing tool for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

This is the strategic lens through which any conversation over China, and the associated geopolitical and geostrategic environment we find ourselves in, must occur. Tonga is China’s close friend and trustworthy partner in the Pacific islands region, the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga HE Mr Huang Huaguang said on January 28, and announced the Chinese government's cash offer of $600,000 (USD) to assist relief efforts in Ha’apai.
