Nuku'alofa, Tonga
Seventeen hundred years before the dawn of the Viking Age in Europe, the first Polynesians crossed the western flank of the Polynesian triangle to settle in Tonga. Thus began the final chapter in the human settlement of the globe. A newly released book, ‘The Birth of Polynesia: An Archaeological Journey Through the Kingdom of Tonga’, documents this story. The author David V. Burley, is currently visiting Tonga.

An entertaining new book of historical fiction was launched this morning by Sam Lala, a Fijian writer and adventurer who has been living in Tonga for many years. The 183 pages volume, titled “They Said”, is his second book.

The Friendly Islands Bookshop today moved back to the Tungi Colonnade building in the Nuku'alofa Central Business District, exactly six-years to the day since the riots and fire on November 16, 2006 destroyed the shop, warehouse and stock amounting to $1.2 million pa'anga in unrecoverable losses.
