Tonga will receive USD$5.5 million to help roll out its vaccination program, after the Asian Development Bank today, approved USD$18.9 million in grants to help four developing member countries in the Pacific roll out safe and effective vaccines against the coronavirus disease COVID-19.

The Asian Development Bank has allocated $20.3 million to assist its developing members to access CoViD-19 vaccines and establish systems for fair and efficient vaccine distribution.

A USD$45 million port upgrade project is being proposed to develop Queen Salote Wharf as an international gateway container and general cargo terminal.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) increased its response to the novel coronavirus disease pandemic by $13.5 billion, increasing its response package from $6.5 billion to $20 billion on Monday, 13 April.

Multi-million dollar grants for Tonga, aimed at developing clean renewable energy sources, and also to improve the delivery of social services, were signed by the ADB Director General for the Pacific, Ms Carmela Locsin and the ADB Executive Director Mr Syurkani Ishak Kasim on behalf of the Government of Tonga at the ADB’s headquarters in Manila on 16 September.

A $5 million grant has been approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to continue helping Tonga strengthen its fiscal position on June 6. The funds will be released after Tonga adopts prudent policies and better public financial management, aiming to improve Tonga’s business climate with policy, regulator and public enterprise reforms.

With a dire warning that, “If we do not act now, by 2050, 90% of the region’s coral reefs will be dead, and there will be no commercially exploitable wild fish stocks left,” the President of the Asian Development Bank, Mr Takehiko Nakao, launched an ‘Action Plan for Healthy Oceans and Sustainable Blue Economies for Asia and the Pacific’ yesterday, 3 May in Fiji. Pacific Islands are way behind the rest of the world with regards to public accessibility to basic utilities such as Water, Sanitation and Electricity, according to the Asian Development Bank’s July 2018 Pacific Economic Monitor, but some of the 15 countries in the study, including Tonga, are doing better than others.
