The first Climate Change Trust Fund aimed at financing small climate change resilience projects in Tonga and supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Tonga was launched today.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a record $3.7 billion in climate operations in 2016, a 42% increase from $2.6 billion it approved in 2015. This comprised $2.65 billion for climate mitigation and $1.08 billion for climate adaptation. In the Pacific, climate operations include the ADB’s proposed Pacific Islands Renewable Energy Investment Program with the support of the Green Climate Fund.

The Asian Development Bank will increase its financial commitment to the Pacific Region in the coming years, said its Executive Director, Ms Swati Dandekar who visited Tonga with six Executive Directors from 25-29 October, on the 50th Anniversary of the ADB.

Tonga has received a $3 million grant and a $3 million loan approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to strengthen long-term economic growth and to have the capacity to respond to external economic shocks such as those caused by natural disasters.
