Tonga could be used as a transfer point for the illegal trade of arms if its government doesn’t sign the International Arms Trade Treaty warns Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA). In the Pacific region, Tuvalu, Samoa, Australia and New Zealand have signed and ratified the treaty and Vanuatu, Palau, Kiribati and Nauru have signed.

Strong new measures to tighten regulations on arms trade estimated at $100 billion worldwide are expected to be made during the first Conference of States Parties (CSP) for the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in Cancun, Mexico on 25 August. Campaigners say the Pacific will play a large role in preserving peaceful societies in an increasingly violent world, however some states, including Tonga, are neither a state party nor a signatory to this treaty.
