Tonga's Land Court ruled that a private money lender, the Wallaces, had no legal interest in the lease or in the proceeds of sale of a property lease held by Lucy Ana Ilaiu. In making the ruling the President of the Land Court, Lord Chief Justice O. G. Paulsen warned that it is not open to persons to use legal processes, such as the procedure for lodging caveats, unreasonably or for improper purposes.

A proposal for government to finance the 2019 Pacific Games with Consumption Tax, instead of a levy on profit from foreign currency exchange transactions was presented by Bernie Poort from the ANZ Bank and Dan Henson from the Bank of the South Pacific to the Minister of Finance, Hon. ‘Aisake Eke during a Tonga Chamber of Commerce special meeting on Friday, 31 July.

Although Tonga’s economy continues to be weak, there are some positive indicators, according to a market update on July 1, by the Deputy Governor of Tonga’s National Reserve Bank, Jessie Cocker, who met with senior regional officers of ANZ Bank on June 28.

The Shoreline Group of Companies has parted company with its main financier the ANZ Bank. At the end of last month ANZ ceased to do the billing for Shoreline Power, it closed down its branch at the Shoreline Headquarters and removed its ATM machine from outside the building.
